Out of all radio controlled vehicles available, the most difficult one to maneuver is the helicopter. However, this is also one of the most interesting flying machines you can find and many people have developed a great love for radio control flying after using a RC helicopter for the first time.
Controlling a helicopter is more difficult than controlling other vehicles because you have to think on all axes; you need to control lateral movement, vertical and horizontal movement and the back and forward movement. 360 degree maneuverability is achieved by adjusting the angle of the two rotors.
The most important thing that you should know about buying your first radio control helicopter is that you shouldn’t get an expensive one. If you really find a top of the line model that you like, you should also purchase a beginners’ helicopter to help you get used to the controls. The differences in controlling a cheap model and an expensive one are not many, but you will notice them.
If you want to make sure that your helicopter won’t crash on your first flight, you can start off by downloading an RC game and connecting your remote control to your PC. After a couple of hours of virtual flying you can practice hovering at a low altitude and preferably over a mattress. This is the only way to make sure that your radio control helicopter won’t get damaged if you lose control. While smaller helicopters can resist quite a few crashes, a large gasoline powered one will most likely require major repairs as soon as the propellers touch the ground.
Flying a helicopter will take some getting used to, but after a couple of days, you will see exactly how much fun it can be.
